The United States Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship, is the registering agency of Apprentices in New Jersey.
An employer or trade union whose business is based in New Jersey may sponsor full time employees as Apprentices.
Sponsors are like mentors who provide on-the-job learning (OJL) to full-time employees within one occupational title.
Sponsors commit to provide OJL and ensure that apprentices are availalbe to attend RTI classes.
Sponsorship is at no cost to the employer since RTI is paid directly by the apprentices to the educational institution(s).
An employer should contact the County Apprenticeship Coordinator to register employees as Apprentices.
County Apprenticeship Coordinators are located in each county (typically in the county vocational school) to facilitate Apprentice registration and coordinate Apprenticeship programs in their respective counties.
The allowable number of Apprentices:
Is determined by the United States Department of Labor
Is subject to change over time
Varies by county and job classification
Is a ratio of the number of full time Trainers to Apprentices
An Apprentice is not registered until all original forms are processed and approved by the United States Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship (OA).
Sponsors of five or more Apprentices are required to form a Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC).
