May School Highlights

Academy for Allied Health & Biomedical Sciences

  • The Woodbridge Academy Spanish Honor Society organized a school-wide art contest. Students’ work is on display around the building. 

 

  • Nava’s Spanish classes participated in the National Spanish Exam. Eighteen students were recognized for their achievement.

             

  • The Woodbridge Academy 8th Grade Digital Media Technology students designed posters reminding people about the true meaning of Memorial Day. 

 

  • The Woodbridge Academy Whole School Whole Child Wellness Committee purchased customized masks for our hybrid students. 

 

  • The Woodbridge Academy Whole School Whole Child Wellness Committee partnered with George Street Playhouse to conduct acting classes after school during May. 

 

  • On May 5th fifteen students from the Woodbridge Academy Class of 2022 were selected as mentors for our incoming freshman class. 

 

  • The George Street Playhouse partnered with Ms. Leah Hoffman to help integrate the arts into our English Language Arts curriculum during May. During joint teaching sessions with Ms. Hoffman, students enhanced their ELA curriculum through this joint collaboration.

 

Academy for Science, Mathematics, & Engineering Technologies

  • Edison Academy Students who completed our Senior Mentorship Program presented to their peers on experiences gained and lessons learned. Mentor partners included Grotto Engineering, Rutgers University, and RWJUH.

 

  • Academy Sophomore Shagun Khare was recently awarded the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) Renaissance Award for her achievements in STEM and AEOP. This Award is given to an AEOP participant who has successfully completed two or more unique AEOP Programs during or prior to 2021.

 

  • Thirteen Edison Academy students attended the Women and Girls STEM Career Workshop on May 13th. The workshop was led by Johnson & Johnson executives, mentors and interns and our students who attended will receive a certificate of completion.

 

  • Academy Senior Sruthi Suresh and her partner Charly Castillo presented on their project for Governor's STEM Scholars on May 18th. They also wrote an Op-Ed titled "Space is the future of science, so why don't we teach it in school?" through the program which was published in the Jersey Journal.

 

  • On May 20th the MCA Rocket Team participated in the 2020-2021 NASA Team American Rocketry Challenge and launched qualification flights. The team participated in collaborative lectures on rocket assembly, aerodynamic forces, theoretical rocket science, and other basic principles of aerospace engineering.

 

  • On May 21st Edison Academy seniors attended the MCVTS district-wide Prom at Lake Chateau Banquet Hall with students from the other 4 campuses

 

  • On May 25th Edison Academy Juniors placed 1st in the Physics Bowl among all region 4 schools. Physics Bowl has been held annually for the last 35 years by the American Association of Physics Teachers.

 

East Brunswick School of Career Development

  • This year’s Senior Prom was held on May 21st at the Lake Chateau in Woodbridge. COVID-19 restrictions were in place. Each school had their own room for dinner with a large common area outside with a DJ and dancing. A good time was had by all.

 

  • Kapcos’ Carpentry and Mr. Wiseman’s Building Services classes had the opportunity to design and construct a foot bridge in Jamesburg Park. The bridge was a laminated truss structure over a creek to enable hikers to access the back part of the park. Mr. Kapcos’s class spent several weeks laminating the trusses in their shop before transporting them to the park where they were constructed over several days.  Despite several rain delays, the bridge was completed on time and within budget. The Middlesex County Parks department paid for the materials for this project.

 

East Brunswick Campus

  • Our Digital Film program’s student’s films were selected into various film festivals and had some remarkable results:

FILM NOW FESTIVAL May 23, 2021 - The Ambler Theater - Ambler, PA

  • Top 3 Experimental - Growing Pains by Jennifer Ruiz-Gonzalez (Senior from New Brunswick)
  • Top 3 Experimental - Norenphrine by Maya Zeidman (Sophomore from South Brunswick)
  • Top 3 Animation - Racing Blocks by Aldan Ortiz (Junior from Perth Amboy)

 

  • Our Music Technology and Performance students produced and delivered their 2nd Annual Music Showcase virtually on YouTube on May 7th. It featured 20 pieces that were recorded and filmed in our studio. The material was about 50% original and 50% “cover” recordings.  

 

  • The mainstage production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream took place in our campus courtyard from May 26th through May 30th. There were evening and matinee performances scheduled.  

 

  • Our Digital Film Program, under the leadership of their teacher Mr. Louis Libitz, produced and successfully aired their 7th Annual Film Festival on our campus grounds on May 12th and 14th.  

 

 

  • Two senior students in Pre-Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing, Kevin Barbosa and Shane Fusco, completed internships at Forza International recently.  Shane was offered to continue working there in a paid co-op setting.  

 

  • Our FFA chapter, led by Mrs. Kylie Naylor, made 15 silk floral arrangements, in honor of Memorial Day, that were given to the Veteran Residents at Sunrise of East Brunswick, located on Summerhill Road. 

 

Piscataway Campus

  • Lucas’ Health Technology senior class completed and passed their skills test for the Certified Nurse Assistant certification. Students were tested on 5 random skills of the more than 40 they learned for their certification. 

 

  • Leahy’s Building Maintenance students, along with Mr. Williams, Cooperative Education Coordinator, built and installed Kestrel bird nesting boxes and stands for the Middlesex County Parks Department.  The students installed the nesting boxes and stands at Davidson’s Mill Pond Park and Ireland Brook Conservation Area. The stands tower 20 feet over the Kestrel’s natural habitat and are designed to safely lower the nesting boxes. Park employees can then open a door to observe the Kestrel family’s progress. Afterwards, the nesting boxes can be raised again to help protect them from natural predators.

 

  • Diemer’s Culinary Assisting and Foods Employment (CAFE) students are continuing to work on their shop make-over through categorized activities.

 

  • On May 20th over thirty seniors and their guests enjoyed a lovely night under the stars for Prom 2021. After dinner, seniors spent the evening dancing on the outdoor patio at the Lake Chateau in Woodbridge.
