Admissions FAQ:
Q: Who can apply to Middlesex County Magnet Schools?
A: Any resident of Middlesex County can apply and attend for free, with free transportation provided by your home district. Anyone outside of Middlesex County can apply, but, if choosing to attend, will pay tuition determined by our Board of Education.
Q: What is the application deadline?
A: We have a preferred deadline of March 22, 2024. Applications will still be accepted beyond that date on a first-come, first-served basis if there are seats remaining. We encourage all interested students to apply as early as possible.
Q: What happens after I submit an application?
A: One of the counselors (Ms. Rise: last names A-F or Mr. Johnson: last names G-Z) will review your application and reach out to you to schedule an admissions interview. Keep an eye out for an email from us. Check your spam folder periodically just in case it gets routed there.
Q: How many students will you accept?
A: We typically accept around 75 incoming 9th graders.
Q: Can I apply if I'm going into 10th, 11th, or 12th grade?
A: We do not consider applications for incoming 12th graders unless they have previously had at least one year of career technical education. We do not typically accept 10th or 11th graders because we cannot exceed a certain number of students in each career major for safety reasons. On rare occasions, a spot may become available, and it will be dealt with on a first-come, first-served basis.
Q: Can I change my mind about my career major choices after I submit my application?
A: Yes, you are able to make changes to your choices up until school starts. Contact your counselor.
Q: Is there an entrance exam?
A: No, there is no entrance exam. Students may be asked to take a placement test for math and ELA. Students may also be required to attend a week-long summer transition program based on final grades.
Q: Can I apply if I have an active IEP?
A: Perth Amboy Magnet School does not offer special services. Students with active IEPs are encouraged to apply to either our East Brunswick or Piscataway campuses where services are available.
