• Happy Healthy Holidays

It is the holiday season - it can be hard to remain healthy when there are so many family gatherings and opportunities to eat. Tips and links on this page will help you stay healthy during the holidays.

    Slow Down
Did you know it takes about 20 minutes after food enters our mouths before the brain starts to perceive we’re getting full? Slow down at the dinner table this holiday season. Tale time to sit and savor the holiday food flavors. Listen to your stomach and stop eating when you’re full.

    Avoid Overeating
Want to take some easy steps to a healthier holiday? Don’t go to holiday meals or parties on an empty stomach; eat a meal or have a light snack beforehand. Reduce your portion sizes and take smaller amounts of your favorite foods. Skipping meals makes it harder to keep your consumption level in control and arriving hungry may increase your chances of overeating.

Tips to Reduce the Amount of FAT You Eat When Dining Out:
    • Nothing is off limits - eat what you but limit the amount.
    • Order a salad with the dressing on the side. Put on only as much dressing as you need to add a little flavor to the salad.
    • Order a “half-order” or divide your meal in half and take the leftovers home. Be sure to refrigerate your leftovers within 2 hours.
    • Watch for high-fat descriptions such as: “golden crispy”, “fried”, “creamy”, “gravy”, and “cheesy”. Choose foods described as “broiled”, “poached”, “grilled”, “seasoned”, and “roasted”. Skip the sour cream and butter, or ask for it on the side.
    • Order a smaller burger or grilled chicken sandwich. Add lettuce and tomato and skip the extra sauce and mayo.
    • Share dessert with a friend or family member.
