• Spring/Summer Seasonal Allergy Information

Spring has almost sprung and so has the allergy season.  This year is especially bad with lots of trees blooming together with the colder than usual spring.  Seasonal allergic rhinitis, commonly referred to as hay fever, affects millions of people.  This Spring has been particularly hard for those with allergies and for those that "do not have allergies" with the amount of pollen outside. Also allergy symptoms and symptoms of Covdi-19 are very similar.  It is important to speak with your MD regarding new symptoms or worse than usual allergies since Covid-19 and flu are still circulating out in the community despite the decrease in the number of cases.  If you are not feeling well - stay home, speak with your family physician and take a Covid-19 and/or flu test if indicated.

    Symptoms include:
    • sneezing
    • stuffiness
    • runny nose
    • itchiness in your nose and eyes
These allergic reactions are most commonly caused by pollen and mold spores in the air, which start a chain reaction in your immune system. If your seasonal symptoms are making you miserable, an allergist / immunologist, often referred to as an allergist, can help. Talk your doctor to see if they can recommend specific treatments or an allergist.

    Preventative Measures
    • Keep your windows closed at night and if possible, use air conditioning, which cleans, cools and dries the air.
    • Try to stay indoors when the pollen or mold counts are high.
    • If you re outside for long periods of time when you return indoors, take a shower, shampoo your hair and change clothes - this reduces your exposure to pollens on your body and clothes
    • When traveling by car, keep your windows closed.
    • Take any medications your doctor has prescribed.
