Information sessions scheduled for MCVTS adult cosmetology program

Two information sessions for prospective adult cosmetology students have been scheduled by the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools.

The first session will be held Monday, June 12, at 6 p.m. on the MCVTS East Brunswick Campus, 112 Rues Lane. The second is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to noon on the Piscataway Campus, 21 Suttons Lane.

Classes, which will begin in September, are held Monday to Friday in two sessions on each campus: noon to 6:30 p.m. or 3:30 to 10 p.m. in East Brunswick; 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or noon to 6:30 p.m. in Piscataway. Students must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.

“Our tuition is very affordable,” said Dawn Lystad, MCVTS director of adult education, and graduates have a better than 90 percent passing rate on the licensing exams of the state Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling.

Valerie Dobrolosky, an adult cosmetology instructor for 12 years, said the course trains students to work in hair salons, spas and in related areas, such as the entertainment industry.

“It takes passion for hair and passion for communicating with people,” she said. “Our students have a lot of success – some have gone on to become managers or to own their own salons.”

“It’s a good program; you’re almost guaranteed to pass,” said current student Rachel Grecco of Sayreville.  “It’s very hands-on and it’s fun.”

The MCVTS Adult School also offers day and evening programs in practical nursing, and evening programs in electrical technology; heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology; manicuring;  plumbing technology, and skin care, as well as apprentice training in business and office occupations, construction trades and manufacturing industries, and customized training that can be developed to meet the needs of employers.
