September School Highlights

Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences

The homerooms were challenged to create the best mini Public Service Announcement for the Academy. The students put their all into the challenge and approximately 10 3-to-5-minute videos were submitted. The top three videos are being loaded on the school’s website.

The Career Choices program students of the month for September are John Bakos for Construction Technology AM, Luis Velasco for Digital Media Technology AM, and Omar Rojas for Food and Health Technology AM. In the afternoon, the students recognized are Isabella Marquez for Construction Technology PM, Naseem McCleod for Digital Media Technology PM, and Ryan Ferraro for Food and Health Technology PM. Mr. Sullivan and the Career Choices teachers were very proud of the attitude and work ethic demonstrated by these students.

Club Day clubs were formed and focus on Arts Integration and Stress Relief Activities. Students will be given 1 hour, once a month to meet in these clubs with teachers who proposed the clubs and will oversee the activities.

Parent Night was held on Thursday, September 27, 2018. We had approximately 600 guests in attendance, including approximately 30 guests in Career Choices. We had our annual college fair, which featured approximately 20 college representative and military reps, several club information tables, including HOSA accepting memberships and selling Woodbridge Academy lab coats, Red Cross Club, raising money for Hurricane Relief, class councils selling refreshments, PTA membership and information, and teacher presentations. Everything flowed exceedingly well and the administration had to usher the final guests out of the building well past 9:30 p.m.

HOSA Future Health Professionals launched its membership drive and collected dues from 200 students. The importance of belonging to a Career Technical Student Organization linked to the Academy’s themes is not lost on the students. They hope to send leadership to the Fall Leadership Conference and then prepare for regionals, state, and national competitions and conference.

Woodbridge Academy was proud to announce that 19 students received recognition in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Five students were named Semi Finalists and 14 were selected as Commended Scholars. Approximately 1.6 million juniors take the PSAT and undergo an initial screening. The recognized students stand out among the slightly more than 30,000 top scoring students. About 16,000 students become Semi-Finalists and have a lengthy screening process involving character, grades, leadership and essay writing. There

are about 7,500 scholarships available for the Finalists. The Semi Finalists are Aashna Mehta, Sanjit Menon, Anisha Patel, Yash Patel, and Lakshay Sood.

The 2018 Woodbridge Academy soccer team is experiencing its best start to a season that they have ever had, according to Coach Scott Modzelewski. The Hornets are currently 4-1 and first place in the GMC Silver Division! One sophomore, Shivam Patel, is dominating offensively with 8 goals in 5 games, while Sophomore Goalkeeper, Anish Batta, has over 40 saves in his first year at the Varsity level. The team is extremely motivated and focused, with the leadership of Captains Darshan Patel and Sathya Rameshkumar, and strong performances from Chloe Jacques, Sanjit Menon, Shraven Subramanian, and Nikhil Azhagiri. The Junior Varsity program continues to compete at a high level and is planning on competing in the County JV Tournament for the second year in a row. “Our student-athletes are excited and working together great thus far. We are optimistic for the remainder of the season.” Coach Modzelewski said.

The 2018-2019 School year began great with all of our 9th graders and returning students eager to start a new year.  Prior to the beginning of the year, Mr. Feldman and the Child Study team hosted a “Freshmen Kickoff” to welcome new students.  Activities included games, food, and giveaways.  The students appreciated the event and were given a positive introduction to a new school for them.

Students from the East Brunswick SkillsUSA chapter have been spending their Saturdays working Rutgers concessions for the football games as a fundraiser. The students and advisors are responsible for running all aspects of the concession stand, including inventory, prep, and sales for all seven of the home games in return for a portion of the income the stand earns.

Students researched the contributions of famous Hispanics to present to the class along with special lessons in culture on Friday’s to enhance student knowledge of traditions.

On Friday, September 28th, Piscataway Campus had its first of many college representatives visit to give presentations to our students.  Jessica Pepenella of Manor College in Jenkintown, PA, spoke to all of our Senior English classes in our Media Center, as well as some Juniors and Sophomores.  Our goal in having college, career, and military representatives come to our school is to assist students in understanding their range of options upon graduation, and to prepare and decide well ahead of time.  Within the next few weeks, the US Army, NJIT, and Berkeley College will be visiting with more visits in planning stages.
