Academy for Science, Mathematics, & Engineering Technologies
First day of the 2020-2021 school year! Even though many of our students were learning remotely, it was nice having students back in the building. Students did well with social distancing, wearing masks and all the other safety procedures put in place during these unprecedented times.
Academy sophomore and Cadet 1st Lt. Varija Mehta of the Civil Air Patrol (C.A.P.) participated in 5 Air Force Approved Missions (AFAM), including Tyvek Operational Gown Assembly (TOGA), At-home Mask Making and Edison Demobilization missions. In addition, outside of CAP, she constructed 100, 3-D printed face shields for frontline workers in Healthcare and other essential services. Varija's Squadron (NJ-102) along with others around the nation, has continued to fulfill one of the organization’s main Core Values: Volunteer Service. Members have been active in C.A.P.’s COVID-19 disaster relief efforts following appropriate social distancing procedures and precautions. They are working tirelessly to package food at the local food banks, make PPE (hospital gowns) from Tyvek material at the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad and River Road Rescue Squad (Piscataway), sew masks at home and collect medical supply donations for hospitals, veteran homes, first responders, and others in need.
The Academy's Spanish Honor Society held their annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony for Port Authority Officer Richard Rodriguez (MCVTS - Perth Amboy Tech Graduate 1988) who died tragically when he rushed into the World Trade Center to save lives. Richard's parents and sister attended the ceremony which included a reading of Officer Rodriguez's biography by Senior Isaac Jaramillo and a visitation to his memorial by all participating staff and students. The ceremony was held at Middlesex County College's 9/11 Memorial Bench situated between 2 trees planted shortly after this horrific tragedy 19 years ago. The ceremony was live-streamed for virtual students to allow them to participate remotely.
Eighteen Edison Academy students have been named Commended Students in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, have been presented to each of these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2021 competition for National Merit Scholarship Awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

On September 30, 2020, the East Brunswick Campus held its first ever Virtual Parents’ Night and it went well.
East Brunswick School of Career Development
The 2020-2021 School year began in a way as we have never seen before. On September 3, 2020 we opened our doors to 10th and 11th graders for their Career Tech Ed classes while 9th and 12th graders received their academic learning remotely. On September 4, 2020, 9th and 12th entered for their CTE while 10th and 11th graders did their academics remotely. Despite the challenges of the first few days, it was great to have our students and teachers back in the building.
Loriann De Sousa Rego, Agricultural Science, wrote an article about the benefits of gardening that was featured in a Rutgers Newsletter. Loriann was a 2020 STEM Ambassador and a teen guest blogger. The article depicts the benefits of gardening, especially during the pandemic. She spoke about the mental benefits as well as the physical. Congratulations to her on a job well done.
The East Brunswick campus has recently received Bronze Status from Sustainable NJ. Zach Levine, English teacher for EBCD, took a lead role on making this happen. However, it was the entire staff who participated in this venture. In order to receive Bronze Status, a series of “points” needed to be received. These “points” were granted by list of items needed to show that we were a Green School and how we promoted sustainability as part of our everyday routines. Through lesson plans, extracurricular activities, CTE Programs, and other areas where we show sustainability, helped us reach this goal.
