January School Highlights

Academy of Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences

Ms. Wechsler’s 10th grade Spanish classes completed a group assignment creating a Morning Show which required all the vocabulary and sentence structures they had been learning in class for the finalized Morning Show.

 

Sophomore student Anushka Khandelwal received a photography award from Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for the second consecutive year.

 

Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Technologies

On January 12th junior Shivam Syal participated in Hack JA 2021. This Virtual Hackathon had approximately 300 participants from around the world with four winners in different categories. Shivam's project "PictureBook" won first place as Best Entrepreneurial Hack. This is his fourth straight win at Hack JA.  PictureBook is a Chrome Extension that modifies Google Meets to provide closed-captions with image translation as well as applied review with flashcards. By employing applied visual learning and independent, personalized learning strategies, this project will help early ESL learners effectively learn English.

 

On January 12th Adrija Kundu, Varija Mehta, Ayaan Qayyum and Lavanya Jasra were selected as members of Congressman Frank Pallone's Youth Advisory Council. Congressman Pallone hopes to inspire civic-minded high school students to be involved in community and political issues on a local, state and national level. Council members will have an opportunity to advise the Congressman on matters that affect young adults and provide input in legislative issues.

 

On January 13th the Middlesex County Academy Science Olympiad team competed virtually in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh. At the awards ceremony our SciOly team received 8 medals and 11th place overall out of 52 teams

 

MC GREEN is a Robot that is being built for the Middlesex County Improvement Authority with the help of our Electrical/Computer and Civil/Mechanical Engineering students, Pre-Engineering students from our East Brunswick campus and our Welding students at our Piscataway campus. This morning, as part of the MP2 design reviews of the Edison Academy Senior Projects, the three ECET design reviews for the MC GREEN 2.0 Robot were presented on Google Meet. MCGREEN will be used at Middlesex County Events to teach children about sustainability.

 

Prerna Kulkarni won a Silver Key for the Scholastic Writing and Arts Competition in the poetry category for her poem "The Peach Crayon."  Sanjana Bandi won two Scholastic Art and Writing Regional Awards, a Gold Key and a Silver Key.  Sanjana’s Gold Key entry will be considered for a National award. 

 

East Brunswick Campus

Mrs. Kylie Naylor, Agriscience Technology instructor, will be representing NJAAE (New Jersey Association of Energy Engineers) at the New Jersey Agriculture Convention this year as a delegate. 

 

The following students in our Arts Technology and Theatre career major programs won Thespy Superior Awards at the NJ Virtual Thespian Festival held January 16-17, 2021.  These students are eligible to compete in Nationals once they have been inducted:

Arden Gonzalez - Theatre student, Monologue

Paige Brathwaite - Arts Technology student, Costume Design

Louis Meagher-DiEllo - Arts Technology student, Costume Design

 

Students in the National Technical Honor Society and their advisor, Mrs. VanWart, conducted a shoe drive as part of the Leave a Good Footprint Program, which works with the Soles 4 Souls organization.  They collected 87 pairs of gently used shoes, sneakers, and sandals.  Leave a Good Footprint Program raises awareness about the global impact of lack of footwear in developing countries.  The shipping of their six large boxes was paid by the generosity of Zappos shoe company. 

 

East Brunswick Career Development

Two juniors from Mr. Colavito’s Auto Services class have enrolled in a self-study program offered to students 16 years of age and older.  This program is a Jaguar/Land Rover certification program that can lead to a position in a local Jaguar/Land Rover upon graduation.

 

Piscataway Campus

Mr. Foli’s Welding student, Alex Day, fabricated a ‘like new’ replacement snow flute to fix one of the Piscataway officer’s snowblowers. The officer was very grateful and impressed by the skillset of a junior at our school.

 

Mr. Diemer’s Supermarket Career students are continuing to set up the aisles of our store transferring what they have learned in class to the shop. They have been working on plan-o-grams and merchandising techniques.

 

Piscataway and East Brunswick held an 8th grade virtual tour video of the career major classrooms.  The students were able to get an up close view of the different career majors that are offered at the Piscataway and East Brunswick campuses. Students were also shown how to navigate our school website and had the opportunity to ask questions regarding our high school programs.
